Lessons 1 - 10
Lesson 1
Students are introduced to the topic of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. This introduction involves showing the students to the class Weebly. The students are informed this will give them an overview of what they will be doing throughout the unit. A class discussion is conducted to find out what the students already know about the play, or if they have seen or read it, or any other Shakespeare works. The teacher then briefly informs the students of what the play is generally about, and informs the students that they will be putting to use what they had learnt in the previous unit on language devices, in this unit.
The students are then introduced to the website Blogger and each student is asked to create a blog. The students are told they will be given a focus question each week of the unit to answer in their blog. They are told that this will be an at-home activity and form part of the assessment for this unit. They are informed that it is a reflective and individual task.
The focus question for the lesson 1 blog reflection is:
‘What are your thoughts, feelings and expectations on studying Macbeth in this unit?’
Lesson 2
This lesson the students will start to read the play of Macbeth. They will split into groups of two and will each be given a section of the play to read and summarise. At the end of the lesson, each group will present to the class their summary.
Lesson 2 blog reflection question:
‘Provide a brief summary of what you have learnt this lesson about Macbeth. What did you think of the play?’
Lesson 3
In lesson three, students will watch BBC’s 2010 adapted television series of Macbeth to assist them in better understanding the characters, setting and plot. After viewing the series, the teacher will conduct a class discussion on these elements.
Lesson 3 blog reflection question:
‘Choose one of the elements of the play spoken about in today’s class discussion and expand on how you think Shakespeare used this to make Macbeth such a powerful piece of writing.’
Lesson 4
In this lesson, students will explore the language devices used in Macbeth. They will complete an online quiz on school iPad’s in small groups of 3 to jog their memory about the previous unit they completed on language devices. The students will then work in those same groups and will each be given a scene from Macbeth to find the language devices Shakespeare has used in the scene. At the end of the class each group will present to the rest of the class their findings.
Lesson 4 blog reflection question:
‘What language devices did you find in the scene you studied, and what other language devices did other groups find in their scenes? Did you find these language devices were used well to create the scenes?’
Lesson 5
This lesson the students will be introduced to the major assessment task. The teacher will talk through what is required of them, and show them an example of what they have to do. They will be introduced to the Wiki website and asked to choose groups of 3 to work with for the assignment. They will then be informed they must each create a Wiki that the teacher can access. They must upload their Wiki address to the Weebly for the assessment task. The students will be told that this is where they must write down all their ideas for the assessment task and plan as a group what they will be doing for the assignment. They will then be given time in class to set up their Wiki and start planning their assessment piece.
Lesson 5 blog reflection question:
‘How do you feel about the major assessment task? Share your thoughts and feelings. Do you think you will work well with the group you have? What challenges do you think you will face?’
Lesson 6
This lesson students will be given time to continue working on their major assessment task at the beginning of the lesson. Students will also be introduced to Prezi to give students ideas of how they can present their assignment. The teacher will create a Prezi presentation in front of the students to show them some of the different effects it can make and how to use it. Students should already have prior knowledge about Powerpoint presentation so they will not need to be shown how to operate this.
Lesson 6 blog reflection question:
'In what way do you think your group will present your assignment? How is your group working together so far on the task? Have you had any complications?'
Lesson 7-9
Students will present their short films in an in-class presentation.
Lesson 7-9 blog reflection question (students to only enter this reflection once they have presented their assessment piece).
‘How did you find the overall experience of this unit? What did you learn about Macbeth, and the use of language device? Did you enjoy the major assessment task? Did you work well in your group? What would you do differently if you had a chance?’
Lesson 10
Students are given a unit ‘wrap-up’. The teacher will go over what they have learnt and return marks to them for the major assessment task.
There is no blog reflection for Lesson 10.
